The most apparent advantage of shooting with an HDSLR aside from cost is its ability to go anywhere inconspicuously. Director Ilya Polyakov was looking for a way to facilitate
shooting three half-naked women on a city street in broad daylight with no permits. We decided that the Canon 5D was the way to go. The documentary style aesthetic was achieved by shooting handheld with a Red Rock Micro Eyespy Deluxe rig with Arri Mini follow focus.
We used a Canon L Series 24-105 f4 lens shooting through an ND9 and a pola. The barrel on the 24-105 extends quite a bit as it zooms. We didn’t have a donut for our mattebox and papertape inhibited our ability to zoom, so we were forced to create a makeshift camera tent to cut out filter reflections. Lesson learned… carry duvatyne even on guerilla shoots!
